Banatski Despotovac (Magyar Ernőháza, Ernsthausen) is a settlement of the city of Zrenjanin in the Central Banat District. It is 22 km from Zrenjanin, while it is about 13 km from Secanj. Timiş runs 2 km from Banatski Despotovac. The city’s altitude is 83 m.
According to the 2011 census, there were 1291 inhabitants.
The settlement was formed in 1822 by the Armenian ambassador to the Kish Erne. The Kish family then owned the largest land area in Toronto County. The inhabitants were moved from parts of Austria and Germany. They were mainly Roman Catholic creeds, but there were also evangelists. Then comes the Romanian, Croatian and Roma families. The village was originally named Ernehaza, Ernesthaza, Ernestovac, Banatski Despotovac and Ernsthausen, and after 1945 it was named Banatski Despotovac.
The present name was obtained after the declaration of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. The population of the village at the end of 1944 avoided the outbreak of the Red Army and went to Germany, leaving a small number of villagers, who were mostly elderly and children. 1945. In Banatski Despotovac, Serbs from Mrkonjić Grad, Šipovo, Kupres, Glamoča and Livna. The houses and landscapes found in the houses of the original inhabitants were assigned to the settlers.
In the summer of this year, a part of the villages at the village was flooded together for part of Banat in the vicinity of Secanj.
In the settlement Banatski Despotovac there are 1379 adult inhabitants, and the average age of the population is 45.2 years (43.7 in males and 46.7 in females). The settlement has 604 households, and the average number of members per household is 2.68.
